Kidney Cancer Awareness Week – Comms pack

What is Kidney Cancer Awareness Week and why does it matter?

Kidney Cancer Awareness Week 2025 takes place from Monday 3rd February until Friday 7th February. The week aims to raise awareness of and encourage conversations around kidney cancer.

The awareness week also marks the launch of Kidney Cancer UK’s annual patient survey – which reveals valuable insight into the broad range of life and health experiences and issues facing those affected by kidney cancer. The findings from this survey enable health providers to continue to focus on delivering positive changes for patients across the UK – and identify how Kidney Cancer UK can provide the very best support to those impacted throughout their journey.

Some key statistics around kidney cancer include

  • Kidney cancer is now the 6th most common cancer in the UK
  • Around 4,700 people die each year from kidney cancer – which is around 13 people every day[1].
  • Around 13,800 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer each year[2].
  • In the UK, mortality rates due to kidney cancer have increased by 73% since the 1970s[3].

These serious challenges are now being acknowledged and addressed in programmes run by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) who are working on the first Clinical Guideline for kidney cancer which will be published soon.

The new Kidney Cancer National Audit published its first state of the nation report in September 2024, which contained a number of recommendations for improvement. These include improving patient pathways, improving access to diagnostics, and being supported by a specialist expert team.

The main thrust and driver of the Kidney Cancer UK has always been the welfare of patients, their careers and families; we are here to listen, inform and support.

With an increasing number of people developing kidney cancer, treatment options have improved significantly in the last two decades, offering better survival rates not only in the UK, but worldwide, though five-year survival rates in the UK lag behind Europe – which is why we need your help.

As an alliance supporting all kinds of cancer, we’re really grateful for your support this Kidney Cancer Awareness Week. Thank you.

The below text can be built out to incorporate stats from the survey findings once available, as well as any specific initiatives or activities your communities are hosting.

Monday 3rd February – Friday 7th February marks Kidney Cancer Awareness Week.

The week is an opportunity to raise awareness and encourage conversation around kidney cancer. Together, we can ensure those affected by kidney cancer feel supported, whilst raising awareness to help increase the number of people being diagnosed early – enabling them to receive effective care and treatment so they can live a fulfilling life.
